Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo biloba is a unique tree species known for its fan-shaped leaves and distinctive odor. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to improve cognitive function and circulation. Modern research suggests that ginkgo biloba may have antioxidant and neuroprotective properties, potentially benefiting memory and brain health.

The possible benefits from taking this tablet are :

  • Improved cognitive function: Ginkgo biloba may enhance memory, focus, and mental clarity.
  • Increased circulation: It has vasodilatory effects, potentially improving blood flow to the brain and extremities.
  • Antioxidant properties: Ginkgo biloba contains compounds that scavenge free radicals, protecting cells from oxidative damage.
  • Neuroprotective effects: Research suggests it may help protect nerve cells from degeneration and damage.
  • Potential for mood enhancement: Some studies indicate that ginkgo biloba may have positive effects on mood and overall well-being.
  • Alleviation of symptoms in certain conditions: It’s been used to manage symptoms of conditions like dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and intermittent claudication (a circulation disorder).
  • Anti-inflammatory effects: Ginkgo biloba may help reduce inflammation, potentially benefiting various health conditions.
  • Support for eye health: Some evidence suggests it may improve vision and protect against age-related eye diseases like macular degeneration.
  • Aid in reducing anxiety: While more research is needed, some studies suggest ginkgo biloba may have anxiolytic effects, helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety disorders.

Interactions with Medications

Ginkgo biloba may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with blood-thinning medications like warfarin (Coumadin), aspirin, Clopidogrel (Plavix), or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen.

There’s a possibility that ginkgo biloba may reduce the effectiveness of anticonvulsant medications such as phenytoin (Dilantin) or carbamazepine (Tegretol).

It might interact with certain antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), potentially leading to an increased risk of serotonin syndrome or other side effects.

Ginkgo biloba could affect blood sugar levels and may interact with diabetes medications, potentially altering their effectiveness and requiring adjustments in dosage.

There’s a possibility that ginkgo biloba may interact with medications used to treat high blood pressure, affecting blood pressure control.

Side Effects

Gastrointestinal discomfort is the most common side effect experienced with Ginkgo Biloba. This can include symptoms such as stomach upset, diarrhea, or nausea. Some people also experience headaches, light-headedness and dizziness.

My Experience

Despite the many interactions with medications, I didn’t have any negative side effects with Ginkgo Biloba. My initial opinion has been that a lot of benefits are somewhat exaggerated for this herb. I do hear conflicting feedback from people on it also. Personally I didn’t experience much benefit but since I had no negatives I will continue to experiment with dosages, timing and combing with other supplements. Like with other supplement reviews I can note that Supplement.com products seem high quality and affordable.
